Once again, Stevens finds himself back inside the mysterious capsule. Goodwin asks him about what he experienced on the train, but this time he demands an explanation. He wants to know what is happening to him and why he keeps being sent back to the same train.
Goodwin finally gives him some answers. She explains that a train exploded in Chicago that morning, killing everyone on board. The train Stevens has been repeatedly experiencing is the same train that was destroyed in the bombing. She also explains that a man named Sean Fentress was one of the passengers and that Stevens is being sent into the final eight minutes of Fentress’s life.
Goodwin tells Stevens that the explosion is part of a larger threat and that more attacks could follow. His mission is therefore to identify the person responsible for the bombing before another attack takes place. When she asks about the bomb, Stevens tells her that he found it in the train’s restroom and noticed that it was connected to a cell phone detonator.

He tries to snatch his briefcase, but amidst all this, the blast on the distant train takes place due to the bomb explosion. In the scuffle with the man, he is thrown on the tracks, and an approaching train crushes him.
Stevens again finds himself inside the capsule. This time, the power supply suddenly goes out and the oxygen supply is cut off, leaving him shivering in the cold. He manages to get the system working again and confronts the person in command through the monitor.
When the officer asks about the bomb, Stevens admits that he couldn’t identify the person responsible for the explosion. However, he tells the officer that he did manage to save one passenger.

Stevens is sent back to the train once again with the same eight-minute window to identify the bomber. This time, however, he is much better prepared. Having experienced the same events several times, he begins anticipating what will happen before it actually does.

Following Goodwin’s instructions, Stevens rushes to the conductor’s compartment and breaks open the strongbox containing the handgun. While Stevens is still trying to uncover information about himself, Christina returns with a shocking discovery. Captain Colter Stevens was reported killed in action two months earlier.
The news leaves Stevens stunned. When he returns to the chamber, he immediately confronts Goodwin and asks whether he is really dead. Goodwin confirms that although his body can no longer function normally, part of his brain remains active — which is why he can still participate in the Source Code program.
This revelation completely changes Colter’s situation. The chamber he believed he was physically sitting inside is part of the experience created for his mind, while his real body has been kept alive only enough for the Source Code program to use him.
Dr. Rutledge tells Stevens that he should consider it an honor to continue serving his country. Stevens, however, is horrified by what has been done to him and argues that keeping him in this condition and using him for the program must be illegal. Rutledge responds that the operation has been authorized by the military.
Stevens then receives the one assurance that matters to him: once he completes the mission and identifies the bomber, he will finally be allowed to die.
He is sent back into the Source Code again, but the investigation becomes increasingly exhausting. Stevens repeatedly returns to the same train, experiencing variations of the same final eight minutes as he searches for the person responsible for the bombing.
Rutledge makes it clear that the process will continue until Stevens identifies the bomber. He even tells Stevens that he can shoot anyone he suspects if necessary, arguing that everyone on the train is already dead in the real world.

Stevens finds the wallet and finally gets a name: Derek Frost.
By now the train has started moving and the doors are closed. Determined not to lose Frost, Stevens pulls the emergency release and jumps from the moving train. He catches up with Frost near his van and confronts him at gunpoint.
The pieces finally come together. Frost has the cell phone connected to the bomb, and Stevens discovers another, far more dangerous explosive device inside his van. Stevens now knows that Frost is responsible for the train bombing and is preparing another attack.
But Christina has followed Stevens and calls out to him. The distraction gives Frost an opportunity to pull out his gun. He shoots both Stevens and Christina before escaping.
Moments later, Stevens finds himself back inside the chamber.

This time, Stevens has the information the authorities need. He identifies Derek Frost as the bomber, warns them about the radioactive bomb inside Frost’s rented van, and gives them the vehicle details he managed to memorize.
The mission has finally succeeded.
Rutledge thanks Stevens for identifying the bomber, but he is already thinking beyond the current attack. He wants Stevens to reconsider their agreement so that the Source Code program can continue using him for future missions.
Stevens refuses. He reminds Rutledge that he wants to be allowed to die, but before that happens, he makes one final request: send him back to the train one more time.
Now that the bomber has been identified, Stevens no longer wants to investigate the explosion. He wants to use those final eight minutes to try to save Christina and everyone else on the train.
Rutledge dismisses the idea. According to everything they understand about the Source Code, the past cannot be changed. The passengers have already died, and nothing Stevens does inside those eight minutes can alter that reality.

Rutledge Refuses to Let Colter Die
Using the information Stevens provided, the authorities identify Derek Frost and track him down. A SWAT team arrests Frost before he can carry out the planned attack in downtown Chicago.
The Source Code mission is officially a success, and the team celebrates. But Dr. Rutledge now sees even greater potential in the program. Instead of honoring his promise to let Stevens die, he wants to keep him alive so that he can be used for future missions.
Realizing that Rutledge has no intention of letting him go, Stevens turns to Goodwin. He asks her to send him into the Source Code one final time and promises that once the eight minutes are over, she can terminate his life support. Goodwin agrees to this.

He finds the bomb, confronts Derek Frost and handcuffs him using restraints taken from the train’s security officer. Stevens then contacts the police and tells them about the explosive device in Frost’s van, as well as the bomber now being restrained aboard the train.
With the immediate danger under control, Stevens uses the remaining minutes to settle the things that matter most to him. He sends an email to Goodwin and then calls his father.
Pretending to be Sean Fentress, Stevens tells his father that he served alongside Colter in the military. He assures him that Colter loved him, giving both father and son the chance to express the feelings they were unable to share before Colter’s apparent death.
Stevens then turns his attention back to the passengers around him. He pays a comedian on the train to entertain everyone and, as the final seconds approach, shares a kiss with Christina.

As Goodwin switches off Stevens’s life support, the eight-minute window inside the Source Code reaches its end. Colter expects everything around him to disappear. But it doesn’t.
The moment passes, and Colter realizes that he, Christina, and everyone else on the train are still alive. The bomb has been stopped, Derek Frost has been captured, and the reality around him continues beyond the eight minutes that Rutledge had insisted could never be crossed.

The Source Code ending reveals that Dr. Rutledge’s understanding of the program was incomplete.
