The story then shifts to the present day in Taipei, Taiwan, where Lucy is standing outside a hotel with her boyfriend, Richard. She has known him for only about a week, but Richard is already trying to persuade her to do him a favour. He is carrying a locked briefcase and wants Lucy to take it inside the hotel and deliver it to a man named Mr. Jang.
Lucy immediately refuses. She has no idea what is inside the briefcase and sees no reason why she should deliver it for him. Richard offers her $500, insisting that the job is simple: walk into the hotel, ask for Mr. Jang at reception, hand over the briefcase, and leave.
When Lucy asks why Richard cannot deliver it himself, he claims that he recently had an argument with the people inside and believes things will go more smoothly if she takes it instead. Lucy still wants nothing to do with it and tells him that she needs to go home and study.
Richard, however, has no intention of accepting her refusal. Without warning, he handcuffs Lucy’s wrist to the handle of the briefcase.
Suddenly, what seemed like an annoying favour becomes something far more dangerous. Unable to get rid of either the briefcase or the handcuff, Lucy is left with little choice but to enter the hotel and ask for Mr. Jang.
The prehistoric figure shown drinking from the lake is not a random glimpse of early human life. She represents the famous early human ancestor commonly known as Lucy. The film returns to her near the end, creating a direct connection between humanity’s distant beginnings and modern Lucy’s transformation.

Lucy Meets Mr. Jang
At the hotel reception, Lucy nervously asks for Mr. Jang and explains that Richard sent her. The receptionist makes a phone call and repeatedly asks for her name. Lucy reluctantly identifies herself while Richard waits outside, smiling as though everything is going according to plan.
Seconds later, Lucy looks through the glass doors and sees Richard suddenly shot dead.
Before she can process what has happened, several men surround her and forcibly take her into an elevator. They escort her upstairs to Mr. Jang’s suite, where the situation becomes even more horrifying. Inside, Lucy sees badly injured men lying on the floor, covered in blood and trembling in pain. Overwhelmed by what she has walked into, she vomits.
Mr. Jang finally appears with blood on his face and hands. Calmly, he washes the blood away with bottled water before sitting opposite the terrified Lucy. Since Jang does not speak English, he calls someone who can translate their conversation over the phone.
Through the translator, Jang asks Lucy what is inside the briefcase. She insists that she has no idea and explains that Richard simply gave it to her. Jang then writes 140 on a piece of paper. The translator tells Lucy that this is the code needed to open the briefcase.
Jang and his men move away and take cover while Lucy enters the code. The briefcase opens to reveal four packets filled with bright blue crystals.
To demonstrate what the substance can do, Jang’s men bring in a man who is already heavily drugged and make him inhale some of the blue powder. Almost immediately, his body reacts violently. After convulsing, he suddenly begins laughing uncontrollably.
Jang watches for a moment and then shoots the man in the head.
Lucy now understands just how dangerous the people around her are. Through the translator, Jang tells her that he has a job for her. Lucy refuses, but her refusal means nothing to him. One of Jang’s men strikes her, and she loses consciousness.
Professor Norman Explains the Brain-Capacity Theory
Meanwhile, the film introduces Professor Samuel Norman, a neuroscientist giving a lecture about his research into the human brain. Norman explains the theory on which much of Lucy is built: humans supposedly use only about 10% of their cerebral capacity, while most animal species use even less.
According to Norman, dolphins are an exception, having developed access to around 20% of their cerebral capacity. He suggests that this greater capacity allows them to use echolocation—a natural sonar system that humans cannot reproduce biologically.
Norman then asks his audience to imagine what might happen if humans could move beyond the supposed 10% limit. At around 20%, he theorizes, a person could gain complete control over their own body and its functions. With even greater access, entirely new abilities might emerge.
At approximately 40%, Norman suggests that a person could begin controlling other people. At 60%, that control could extend beyond living beings to matter itself.
His lecture also introduces another idea that becomes increasingly important as Lucy changes: time. Norman argues that living organisms essentially have two ways of surviving through time—achieving a form of immortality or reproducing and passing information to the next generation.
Eventually, someone in the audience asks the obvious question: if all of these abilities might become possible as cerebral capacity increases, what would happen if a human being reached 100%?
Norman pauses.
He admits that he has no idea.
Norman’s lecture effectively gives us a roadmap for Lucy’s transformation before we see its full extent. Lucy Wakes Up With Extraordinary Abilities
Lucy eventually regains consciousness, but something about her has clearly changed. Her eyes briefly glow an intense blue, and instead of appearing frightened and helpless, she now sits calmly in the room where she is being held.
When one of Jang’s men enters the room, Lucy deliberately attracts his attention. Believing she is helpless, the man puts his gun down on a nearby table and walks toward her.
Before he can touch her, Lucy suddenly grabs him by the belt and effortlessly flips him across the room. Still holding the belt, she uses it to pull the nearby table toward herself and reaches for the man’s gun. Her movements are remarkably fast and precise, revealing for the first time that something extraordinary has happened to her.
After getting away, Lucy approaches two taxi drivers and asks whether they speak English. When the first driver says no, she abruptly shoots him in the leg. She then asks the second driver the same question. He quickly says yes, and Lucy gets into his taxi and orders him to take her to a hospital.
During the journey, Lucy begins noticing that her senses have become unusually sharp. Sitting inside the taxi, she can clearly hear conversations and sounds coming from people outside the vehicle. Her mind also seems to be processing everything around her with remarkable speed and clarity.
When they reach the hospital, Lucy attaches a suppressor to her gun and tells the driver to wait for her.
Inside, she experiences yet another startling change. Although she does not know the local language, she suddenly finds herself able to understand what people around her are saying, as though her mind can process and interpret the language almost instantly.
Lucy makes her way into an operating room where doctors are performing surgery on a patient. She looks at the man’s medical scans and, after apparently understanding his condition immediately, shoots him.
The horrified doctors stare at her, but Lucy calmly explains that they would not have been able to save the patient anyway because his cancer had already spread.
She then removes the man’s body from the operating table, lies down in his place, and tells the doctors that she needs them to operate on her.
The Doctors Discover CPH4 Inside Lucy
While the doctors operate on her, Lucy takes a phone and calls her mother. Her voice remains strangely calm as she tries to explain what she is experiencing.
Lucy tells her that she can suddenly feel everything—the air around her, the blood moving through her veins, the heat leaving her body, and even the force of gravity. Her awareness has expanded to the point where sensations that normally go unnoticed now seem completely clear to her.
Her memories have changed as well. Lucy says she can access moments buried deep within her mind, reaching further and further back into her childhood. She remembers being sick when she was young and even recalls stroking a cat when she was so small that her mother is astonished she could possibly remember it.
The conversation becomes increasingly emotional as Lucy reaches memories from the earliest moments of her life. Despite the extraordinary changes taking place inside her, she tells her mother that she loves her before ending the call.
Meanwhile, the doctors remove a damaged plastic packet from Lucy’s abdomen. Much of the blue substance that had originally been inside it is now gone.
Lucy asks how long it will take for the substance to leave her system. As the doctor stitches her wound, he asks what was inside the packet.
For the first time, the drug is given a name: CPH4.
The doctor is immediately alarmed. He explains that CPH4 is a substance naturally produced in extremely small quantities during pregnancy. He compares its effect on a developing baby to the enormous energy released by an atomic bomb.
That finally explains the sudden transformation we have been witnessing: the packet implanted inside Lucy was damaged while she was being held captive, allowing a massive quantity of the drug to enter her system.
This is the moment the movie begins connecting Lucy’s transformation with Professor Norman’s earlier lecture. The mysterious blue substance is finally identified as CPH4, while Lucy’s rapidly expanding senses and memory suggest that she is already moving beyond the limits Norman described for an ordinary human being.

Lucy Returns to Jang and Contacts Professor Norman
Now fully in control of herself, Lucy returns to the hotel where Mr. Jang is staying. She moves through the building with remarkable precision, eliminating Jang’s armed men before they can stop her.
She eventually finds Jang relaxing in a room while a woman gives him a tattoo. Lucy calmly gestures for the woman to leave. Once they are alone, she pulls out two knives and drives them through Jang’s hands, pinning him down as he screams in pain.
Lucy needs information. Using her rapidly developing abilities, she enters Jang’s mind and discovers the identities and destinations of the other men being used to transport the remaining packets of CPH4. The drug has been divided among couriers who are being sent to different European cities.
With the information she needs, Lucy leaves Jang alive and goes to the apartment of her friend and roommate, Caroline. She asks to use Caroline’s laptop and begins searching for someone who might understand what is happening to her.
Her search leads her to Professor Samuel Norman.
Lucy rapidly reads through Norman’s years of research and then calls him. Norman initially has no reason to believe the stranger on the other end of the phone, but Lucy tells him that she has already read all of his work and can remember it in extraordinary detail.
She explains that her cells are reproducing at an incredible rate and that the process is continuing to accelerate. More disturbingly, Lucy believes she may have less than 24 hours to live.
She finally tells Norman what caused her transformation: a massive quantity of synthetic CPH4 entered her system.
Lucy estimates that she can now access around 28% of her cerebral capacity. The abilities Norman had discussed theoretically in his lecture are already becoming real for her. She can control her own metabolism and influence other people, and she has begun manipulating electromagnetic signals around her.
To prove what she can do, Lucy takes control of the electronic devices surrounding Norman. Her image appears across his screens as she manipulates the television, telephone, and radio signals remotely.
But Lucy’s biggest problem is no longer understanding what is happening to her. Her mind is absorbing an overwhelming amount of information, and she doesn’t know what to do with everything she is learning.
Norman gives her a surprisingly simple answer: pass it on. Just as living cells transmit information to the next generation, Lucy should find a way to preserve and share the knowledge she is acquiring.
Lucy tells Norman that she will meet him in Paris within twelve hours.
Before leaving Caroline, Lucy writes something down for her. Her heightened perception has allowed her to recognize that Caroline’s health is deteriorating, particularly her liver and kidneys. She gives her advice about what she needs to change and reassures her that if she takes care of herself, she will be alright.
Lucy’s conversation with Norman confirms that his earlier lecture was effectively a preview of her transformation. At 28%, she has already moved beyond complete control of her own body and is beginning to influence people and electromagnetic signals around her. As her cerebral capacity continues to rise, the movie will progressively test the higher stages Norman could only theorize about.
Lucy Reaches 40% as Her Body Begins to Break Down
At the airport, Lucy realizes that the authorities are looking for her after the shooting at the hospital. To avoid being recognized, she changes her appearance before continuing her journey to Europe.
Lucy then contacts French police officer Pierre Del Rio. She tells him about the CPH4 couriers and sends him the information she obtained from Mr. Jang. She asks Del Rio to have the men intercepted and the drug packets taken into police custody, explaining that she will collect them later.
Acting on Lucy’s information, the authorities track down the couriers carrying the remaining CPH4, and the men are apprehended at airports in Europe.
On the flight, Lucy continues absorbing and processing information at extraordinary speed. She works simultaneously on two laptops, using both hands independently as she searches through enormous amounts of information.
When Lucy asks a flight attendant for a glass of champagne, she casually tells the woman to wipe her nose without even looking at her. The confused attendant touches her nose and discovers that it is bleeding, another indication of how precisely Lucy can now perceive what is happening around her.
When the champagne arrives, Lucy raises the glass and makes a simple toast:
“To knowledge.”
By now, her cerebral capacity has reached 40%.
Almost immediately, however, her transformation takes a frightening turn. Lucy notices one of her teeth lying in the champagne glass. She begins coughing, and several more teeth fall out.
Her physical condition rapidly deteriorates. Lucy rushes to the restroom, where her skin and face begin to distort and disintegrate as she struggles to keep control of her body.
Realizing that she is becoming physically unstable, Lucy takes some of the CPH4 she still has with her. The additional dose stabilizes her condition, and her body gradually returns to normal.
Lucy’s breakdown at 40% reveals that her transformation is not simply making her more powerful—it is also destabilizing her physical body. Taking more CPH4 temporarily restores her condition, showing that the substance has become both the force driving her transformation and the means by which she can keep that transformation under control.
Lucy Reaches 50% and Joins Pierre Del Rio
After arriving in Paris, Lucy is taken to a hospital, where Pierre Del Rio and other police officers wait nearby. A doctor tells Del Rio that Lucy has been given an injection and should remain unconscious for the rest of the day.
But Lucy’s cerebral capacity has now reached 50%.
She suddenly opens her eyes and sits upright in bed. A startled nurse notices her and rushes outside to alert the doctors and police. By the time they hurry into the room, however, Lucy is already out of bed and walking through the corridor.
The police officers confront her and order her to surrender. Lucy simply moves her hand and sends them collapsing to the floor. Del Rio, however, is deliberately left standing.
When Del Rio reaches for his gun, he discovers that Lucy has already removed its ammunition. The bullets fall harmlessly to the floor.
Lucy asks him about the remaining CPH4. Del Rio confirms that the packets have been recovered and are being kept in police custody. When he assures her that they are safe, Lucy tells him that they will be safer with her.
Meanwhile, one of Jang’s men has been watching the hospital and reports what is happening to his boss. Lucy intercepts the conversation and realizes that Jang and his men are also moving to recover the CPH4.
Lucy and Del Rio leave together in a police car. Lucy takes control of the vehicle and races toward the hospital where the captured couriers and their drug packets are being held.
Jang’s men get there first. They retrieve the CPH4 packets from the couriers and kill the men who had been carrying them.
As Jang’s men attempt to escape with the drugs, Lucy and Del Rio confront them in the corridor.
Lucy Reaches 60% and Recovers the CPH4
Lucy’s cerebral capacity has now reached 60%, and the abilities Professor Norman could previously only theorize about are becoming a reality.
When Jang’s men try to escape with the briefcase containing the CPH4, Lucy stops them without physically touching them. She prevents the man carrying the briefcase from getting away and effortlessly takes control of the situation.
The armed men attempt to confront her, but their weapons are useless. With a gesture, Lucy pulls their guns away and sends them flying up to the ceiling.
When the men themselves try to attack, Lucy uses her powers to lift them from the ground. Their bodies rise helplessly into the air, leaving them suspended above the corridor while she calmly walks beneath them.
Lucy retrieves the briefcase containing the remaining CPH4 and tells Del Rio to come with her.
Del Rio hesitates. After witnessing what Lucy can now do, he tells her that he doesn’t understand why she still needs him. His abilities as a police officer seem almost meaningless beside hers.
Lucy responds by kissing him.
She tells Del Rio that she needs him as “a reminder.”

Norman is alarmed by the enormous dose and asks whether her body can survive it. Lucy explains that her remaining cells will resist the transformation in an attempt to preserve themselves. To complete the process, she must force the transformation further and push her cerebral capacity toward 100%.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jang and his surviving men arrive at the university. Del Rio and the police engage them in a fierce gunfight while the scientists begin administering the CPH4 to Lucy.
Her final transformation begins.
At 70%, Lucy’s Physical Form Begins to Change
As the CPH4 enters her bloodstream, Lucy’s cerebral capacity rises to 70%. Her body begins transforming into a strange black substance that spreads through the room and connects with the surrounding computers.
By 80%, Lucy’s control over matter has increased dramatically. The black substance absorbs and integrates the nearby technology, gradually forming an extraordinary new computer around her.
Outside, Del Rio and the police continue fighting Jang’s men, but inside the room, Lucy is becoming something increasingly removed from her physical human form.
The black structure forming around Lucy connects directly to Norman’s earlier advice that she should pass on the knowledge she is acquiring. As Lucy moves beyond the limits of her physical body, she begins creating a way for that knowledge to survive and be transferred to others.
At 90%, Lucy Moves Beyond Space and Time
As Lucy’s cerebral capacity reaches 90%, ordinary space and time no longer seem to restrict her. With a movement of her hand, she shifts between different locations before finding herself in Times Square in New York.
Lucy discovers that she can stop the world around her and move backward through time. She travels through earlier periods of human civilization, then beyond recorded history and into the prehistoric world.
Her journey takes her as far back as the age of dinosaurs before she eventually arrives millions of years in the past.
There, beside the water, Lucy encounters the same prehistoric human ancestor shown at the beginning of the movie.
At 99%, Lucy Travels Through the Universe
Lucy reaches toward her prehistoric counterpart, and the two touch fingertips.
Her journey then expands far beyond human history and Earth itself. Lucy travels through space and across the universe as her cerebral capacity continues climbing toward 99%.
Back at the university, Jang moves closer to Lucy while her physical body continues transforming into the black substance surrounding the computers.
As Lucy approaches the final stage, the film shows cells coming together—the reverse of the cellular division imagery seen earlier in the movie.
The meeting between the two Lucys completes an image introduced at the very beginning of the movie. One Lucy represents humanity near its evolutionary beginnings, while the other is approaching the furthest stage of human development imagined by the film. The later image of cells coming together also reverses the cellular division shown earlier, visually suggesting that Lucy’s journey is moving back toward a single origin.
Lucy Reaches 100% Brain Capacity
Lucy finally reaches 100% cerebral capacity. Her transformation is complete, and her physical body disappears, leaving only her clothes behind.
Jang enters the room and fires at the place where Lucy had been sitting, but she is no longer physically there. Del Rio arrives moments later and shoots Jang dead.
The enormous black structure Lucy created then produces a small flash drive. Professor Norman takes it, receiving the knowledge Lucy has gathered during her transformation. Immediately afterward, the black structure disappears.
Confused by what has happened, Del Rio asks:
“Where is Lucy?”
His phone receives a message.
“I AM EVERYWHERE.”

How Lucy’s Transformation Leads to the Ending
By the end of Lucy, Professor Norman’s theories have become the roadmap for Lucy’s entire transformation.
